Owen Bird is the Executive Director of the Sport Fishing Institute (SFI) of BC. A lifelong angler, fishing is in the blood for Bird, introductions to the sport began early and often off the shores of Bowser and Denman and Hornby Islands in Georgia Strait. Following studies at UBC, he worked as a guide on the northern coast, was involved in management and sales for a number of coastal fly-in lodges, and produced internationally broadcast TV fishing shows for 10 years. He also serves as Executive Director of the Family Fishing Society of British Columbia which coordinates and supports family fishing events that take place all over the province each Father’s Day weekend in June.Bird, on behalf of the SFI, developed and implemented the Certified Tidal Angling Guide certification program (CTAG), an industry designed, North America leading trade certification. The program and cadre of certified guides continues to expand and is coast wide. The program, launched in 2010, allows government, the public and other sectors to understand that the sport fishing industry recognizes and takes responsibility for customer service, safety and sustainable resource use. The certification is an opportunity for our experienced, qualified guides to make it known that service and safety offered in BC matches our world-class fishing. More recently, Bird has guided the development of the Fishing BC app, a collaborative project with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Pacific Salmon Foundation. The new app, available on both Apple and Android platforms, provides real time regulations for tidal fishing, a licence holder and a catch log that lets you share details and photos of your fishing experience with DFO, to help manage our fisheries, friends, and family.
