Diesel Engine Maintenance and Repair

Robert & Devon will discuss specifying and maintaining diesel engine systems, including raw water cooling, engine/shaft alignment, fuel filter changes, and belt tension. They will also explain how best to bleed a fuel system and essential spares to carry onboard, and if all else fails: get home tactics!


Robert Hess is a‎ BC licensed "Red Seal" mechanic and a certified Marine Mechanical Technician with over 30 years’ experience working on gas, diesel, and outboard boats. He has repaired, rebuilt, and repowered motor and sailing yachts‎, including producing specifications for engine power, gearbox ratios, shafting and propellers. As a sailor he has repowered & rebuilt numerous sailboats, including his‎ own 38' offshore sloop. Many of these jobs involved designing, fabricating, and installing custom exhaust and cooling systems. ‎He has worked for several large marine engine dealers in Toronto, Vancouver, and now Stones Boatyard in Nanaimo, selling and maintaining Westerbeke, Yanmar, Universal, Volvo Penta, Perkins, and Mercruiser engines, as well as ZF, PRM and Borg-Warner gears. Devon Norris Coming from the Caribbean island of Antigua, Devon is no stranger to the mechanical field, with over 10 years of training and experience in heavy duty mechanics with diesel, gas and Heavy Fuel Oil engine systems. He earned his Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering at the Antigua State College whilst working for Wärtsilä, which manufactures and services power. His moved into the marine world with Nanaimo Yacht Services @ Stones Boatyard in September 2015, and has just completed part 1 of the Marine Mechanical Technician programme at BCIT.
