“Don’t Pop a Plank: Wooden Hull Maintenance & Britework

The safety and longevity of your vessel depends on it. How do you know when you need to refasten, recaulk, or replank a wooden hull? What type of wood should you use and when? Terry will the type of wood to use above and below the waterline, plus varnishes, paints, and finishes to use on different species of wood. You don't want to pop a plank in rough waters because of an inferior product.

Bio

Terry Karlsen has been a shipwright at Commodore’s Boats at Shelter Island in Richmond, BC for 15 years. His specialties are project management, major vessel restorations, woodwork and traditional shipwright work. He is the lead foreman for the ongoing Dredge #4 restoration project in Dawson City, Yukon for Parks Canada. He built a traditional Viking ship from concept to water over a period of 1 year for the movie industry.
